Alpaca flower wall hanging on barbed wire
A little bit of lovely and a little bit of history all in one.
For a while now I've been playing with barbed wire and different shapes to make a wall hanging, but it's never quite been right...
During a few weeks back home on Curtin Springs (a million acre cattle station in Central Australia), I had an order come in for Alpaca Flowers on barbed wire. Dilemma being the only thing I didn't take with me was barbed wire stems for flowers, thinking that we'd easily find some on one of the old fences. WRONG! We covered about 200km finding the old fences and looking for correctly rusted barbed wire. We didn't find the type I needed to make flowers, but we did find this wire. Did you know there are many different types o barbed wire? I didn't until now.
This particular barbed wire, that has been used for these lovely little wall hangings, my father and Poppa call 'Army Barb'. They say it was made only during WWI and WWII. After WWII the army didn't need it any more (it was the wire that was run in coils around trenches), and the surplus was then used by the pastoralists to build fences. When I was chatting with my Poppa (who is 92 and has been on the property since 1956), asking him about the wire and how it came to be purchased, in his beautifully level tone he simply said 'no Dear, we acquired it'. It was the end of the conversation!
Our homegrown alpaca fleeces have been felted into 'flowers' to create this one of a kind flower arrangement. The felting is light so the flower tops have texture, character and a bit of fuzz to make them more lovable. The rusty barbed wire is from WWII and has a story of it's own. The hanging is finished off with 2 handmade paper beads from Curtin Springs Paper (paper made from the Central Australian Native Grasses).
The colours are all natural, the felting done by hand, and they have been constructed with love.
Perfect as a gift for yourself or someone else! They won't wilt or die, and will be beautiful forever.
The wall hanging is approximately 23cm tall and 14cm at the widest part.
There are only 8 available.
**These items are all handmade and one of a kind. The images are examples of previously made alpaca flower stems.
There are a limited number available and even though the design, colours and felting are all the same, the individual pieces all vary. It's part of the charm of buying handmade.**
